Day 1: Impeachment Trial of President Trump [LIVE VIDEO]

Yes, it’s going to infuriate you, that’s a given. Mitch McConnell is currently lying through his teeth as I write this.

Today, the Senate will vote to start President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial with a resolution that sets up the rules of the trial, including how long it will last and how long everyone has to speak. Each side will get a set amount of hours to present its case for or against the president.

President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son. At least we know that no matter what happens, people are ready to put the blame for divisiveness where it really lies: Hillary Clinton and her supporters, the true reason why the Dem party is wholly unsalvagable and must be burnt down forever. ////

It really doesn’t seem to matter what she does, she and anyone who dares not immediately want to hang her in effigy are to blame for everything, even for relitigating 2016, something which Bernie has wholly built his 2020 campaign on.

And again, it seems to work every single fucking time, no matter fucking what, no matter how hard to try to butt back. The media, even those normally not so credulous such as Soledad O’Brian, Chris Hayes, etc., are ready to hang Hillary for this.

The ratfucking is going to win handily in 2020, isn’t it? It’s not even going to be close.

Bernie is no friend of the Left. He’s only a Democrat when it serves him and needs votes from actual Democrats. Bernie and his Bros in many ways helped Pissboy Donnie win the EC. Bernie gave Donnie and the GOP talking points against HRC. Bernie could have got out and gave HRC a full-throat endorsement and campaigned his ass for HRC. But, he didn’t. Fuck him.

It sucks, but Massachusetts has a long history of learned helplessness. We do not think government does anything right. And in turn, our government proves it, at all levels.

(As an appointed city official, I can attest to that. Remember, we have a GOP governor in a time where no one in his party can be considered “good”.)

I think we need to remember this one. The goopers are pretty sure that they’re on the losing side of history and the public, and are counting on the Federal judiciary to be the dead hand of white supremacist rule for decades. If they’re also happy to let the executive walk all over the courts and do nothing, the next Democratic President might want to remember it when the judges try to drag this country back to the 1850s.

What frustrates me is I can never get an answer why despite 30 years in Congress, Bernie has little to his name passed. You can complain about the makeup of Congress during that time but there have been otehr legislators with equally if not more progressive records who have gotten their bills made into law. re: #78 Backwoods_Sleuth

also, if they can’t be bothered to vote, they certainly will not strike/march.

I think a lot of it is geography. Metro Paris is 12 million, out of a 66 million French population. A strike in Paris, Lyon, and Marseilles directly affects a quarter to a third of the population. Strikes in New York and Washington are going to affect a lot less than ten percent, plus they’re the ones who agree with you anyway. We had big Iraq War protests in Washington back in the day, and you wouldn’t even be told about them in DC (except for on the traffic report), much less in West Cowflop, Missouri.

Plus, I live in Western Europe and strikes and marches are just part of the culture. There are strikes, most people don’t even know what they’re about, and everyone shrugs and works around them their usual way.

And the new disease appears in the US…

A man in Washington state has been diagnosed with the mysterious virus, the first case confirmed in the United States since the illnesses first appeared in China last month and which has killed at least six people and sickened hundreds more in Asia, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The man is in stable condition. He arrived in the United States last week, before federal health officials began screening travelers from the central Chinese city of Wuhan at Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York’s John F. Kennedy international airports.

We were talking about that during this evening’s English lesson; the consensus of my students is that China is most likely downplaying or minimizing the actual number of infected (about 200 to 300 or so officially) and that if you multiply that by a factor of four, you’ll probably get a more accurate count.

Mind you, Czechs are deeply cynical, but as they pointed out, “Hey….we’ve had lots of experience with Communist regimes and their statistical manipulations.” Which, to be fair, is difficult to argue against.

Frankly, I don’t know what it’s going to take to get an anesthetized citizenry to realize what a threat the country is facing in having a criminal idiot as a chief executive, a guy who has put every part of the republic up for sale, and for cheap. esquire.com

Unfortunately, a big part of this is that our systems have been shown to be highly resistant to public outrage, especially when the politicians these demonstrations are meant to appeal to are shown to be without shame. Public outrage really doesn’t work on those who have no shame. And our media has been all too willing to launder GOP talking points and minimize any and all demonstrations against the GOP to the point of pointlessness.

We have an entirely broken system poisoned by bad faith to where the only recourse is the ballot, and when that can be broken and gamed, we have nothing.

Interesting sidenote on the “revised” “rules” that CNN has up:

the documents “shall” be admitted as evidence “subject to any hearsay or evidentiary objections the president may make”. That’s an interesting phrase because it suggests a legal standard in line with the Federal Rules of Evidence; which makes me wonder if Roberts will assert himself on those evidence questions or leave it to the Senate and its plethora of non-practicing attorneys and law school drop outs to determine…

Harder to organize than France. We are a larger and more diverse nation with multiple media outlets. There is no longer one place to use and organize one. Also France has workers rights that are enshrined in law, which mean you can’t be fired for exercising your civil rights by taking off from work. This is the Walmart economy, where you can be fired for missing a day for being sick, let alone participating in a general strike.

There could be a legitimate separation of powers argument for prohibiting the courts from enforcing congressional subpoenas. But it would require Congress to exercise its inherent contempt powers and be willing/able to send the capitol police out to arrest people who refused to abide by congressional subpoenas. That would then open the door to potential litigation related to habeas corpus issues and due process rights. Which, invariably, would require judicial review.

In fact, Brevik actually I think went after Charles by name. Here’s what infuriates me about Greenwald. It’s that he goes after people for stances he once held. Support for Iraq and surveillance for starters. And him admitting to being wrong is like Trump admitting he’s wrong, it doesn’t happen. He’s a self righteous windbag who has poisoned a lot of dialogue with his bullshit.

What needs to be clearly realized is that Trump is just as dishonest as any other Republican. The only difference is that Trump lies about absolutely everything, not just the GOP approved list of party-line lies, and he’s worse at lying than most Republicans.

The Dems are showing the sort of performance you give when you know the game is rigged but you want to make the taste of “victory” so bitter that the other side walks away knowing they’ll never be able to enjoy it. Debating procedure and arguing whether what the Repubs are proposing is “fair” or not is playing on their terms.

CNN 6 people dead, 300 infected as China confirms Wuhan virus can be spread by humans
2% fatality rate —— that is pretty scary

It is, but I am thinking (and of course NOT trying to be overly optimistic here) that the virus is probably more serious for those who have weakened immune systems.

Also 300 is a pretty small number. I’d be curious to know how the numbers would look on a larger scale though I would be more than happy to get to a point where a “larger scale” is not a concern.

For comparison, the fatality rate for SARS was around 15%, but it was also substantially higher among people over 64 years of age.

Interestingly enough, I picked up an old TIME magazine from when the big SARS outbreak in 2003 at a thrift store just last week. As it happens, there were just over 8000 total infections before we finally got that one under control.

I know he won’t be removed. The result is already known. Republicans are treating this as a show trial. Democrats aren’t. In the end, the Democrats are going to lose the style battle because of this. So they need to put on a show while getting the real message out. The American public is too goddamn stupid to trust with nuance and the expectation that they will see through the bullshit.

re: #232 Backwoods_Sleuth

This. It’s both of them.

Trump’s lawyers are stupendously awful and it reflects both the fact that they are incompetent and awful, as well as that Trump doesn’t think any of this is bad for him. Repeating Trump’s conspiracy theories isn’t a defense. Repeating the lies isn’t a defense - it’s a violation of these lawyers’ oath taken when becoming officers of the court and they should be disbarred for this gross misconduct.

You can offer up a defense of Trump without lying their asses off. It can be done, but none of them appear capable of making anything resembling a cogent argument.

They can claim that the call language has been misrepresented and that it didn’t rise to a bribe or personal benefit.

But things fall apart so quickly because the admin blocks everything that supposedly would exonerate him - the testimony/witnesses/documents requested that show he did nothing wrong. You might be able to argue there that the requests were not reasonable and that things requested were beyond scope, but I think even that would be a lie.

That’s why Schiff and Democrats’ opening statements are so damning - all the facts and evidence put Trumpworld dead to rights and there’s no exculpatory evidence.

The DNC have only themselves to blame. They keep allowing him to run, not simply for the presidential nomination, but also in their VT primaries as a Dem when he never actually runs in the election as one. Every year he’s run in the VT DNC primary, he’s immediately rejected the nomination and chosen to run as an “Independent.” And instead of either barring him from the primary or simply running another nominee against him, the party allows him to pull this shit so long as he promises to continue caucusing with them.

This is what’s bugged me from the get-go with Bernie.

He broke rules back in 2016, was allowed to skate by, and now his supporters are even more toxic than back then.

Bernie isn’t a Democrat, and the only reason he’s even with the Democratic party primaries at this point is because he refuses to build an independent party, instead opting to try and coopt the Democrats to his own liking.

What’s worse is that there are enough Democrats in the DNC who think that this is acceptable behavior for a lifelong outsider who has no intention of helping Democrats in the long term.

I was initially gonna grill them but then read that this particular fish doesn’t react so well to the grill, and so I’m alternatively considering using either a honey mustard marinade, lemon and herb marinade or Teriyaki, figuring that two to three hours before the oven would be fine).

((edit) Replying to the comments that point out that Trump will be emboldened and conduct impeachable actions again.)

Yes, I agree, that is a given.

The big problem is that if it happens the week before the election, and is about the election, we won’t find out about it until after the election has already happened.

Schumer needs to call out this lying skunk fucker.

Sadly Schumer is not Nancy Pelosi - there are many other senators who could do a much better job than Schumer.

And wouldn’t you know it, “A Face in the Crowd” is on TCM tonight…

You really sell that stiff as a man among men?

Lonesome Rhodes: Those morons out there? Shucks, I could take chicken fertilizer and sell it to them as caviar. I could make them eat dog food and think it was steak. Sure, I got ‘em like this… You know what the public’s like? A cage of Guinea Pigs. Good Night you stupid idiots. Good Night, you miserable slobs. They’re a lot of trained seals. I toss them a dead fish and they’ll flap their flippers.

No Republican anywhere in the country gives a shit about Trump’s crimes. It’s a roughly even split between those who claim a Republican cannot commit a crime (because only Democrats commit crimes) and those who glory in Trump’s crimes as a way to piss off liberals.

re: #340 Backwoods_Sleuth

It’s true that Obamacare is on the ballot this November, although the GOP has already inflicted mortal wounds on it. Explicit action will be needed to save it.

But what’s really on the ballot this November is whether the US president is an elected official subject to the law, or if he is a king who is above the law. More generally, is the US a representative democracy, or a one-party state rapidly becoming fascist under Republican rule?

These are simple questions relating to basic US political reality, but they will seem outlandish to anyone who accepts the relentless media normalization of Trump/Republicans.

Could someone clarify this for me: did the Republican senators completely vote down every Democratic proposal OR did they table them so that theoretically they could be revived? And if tabled, can the Democrats bring each one up again after later arguments?

300lbs of angry hamburger…

A friend of mine and his wife live in rural Pa. The neighbor’s cattle got out of their field into the friend’s yard. They chased the wife out back into her house.

On the other side, that friend raised sheep. I was visiting one time and we watched while one member of the flock figured out how to get out of their field and led the entire flock (?Out of captivity?)

You know who was on the next shipment out.

re: #347 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Family Story Time:

My mother’s mom and dad had a ranch. A few chickens, cows, ducks. It was mostly for escaping the city, not an actual working ranch.

Anyway, they had a cattle guard on the road at the entrance to the ranch. They would regularly find one of their cows on the other side of the cattle guard. It was said that she was jumping over the guard. I didn’t really believe the story. UNTIL NOW. :D

The way I understand it is they’re tabled, but it feels like a trial balloon to see how much blowback they get for it before a final vote.

re: #253 Dangerman (misuser of the sarc tag)

because like i said above, no one else in VT wants the job

In 2018, Bernie’s opposition in the VT Democratic primary were, unfortunately, a collection of non-serious candidates. The brother of an old college friend ran against Bernie, and I followed his campaign closely. He wasted his time on Facebook posturing to a cult of Sanders haters who weren’t even eligible to vote in Vermont. He had no experience in government, he had no policies, he had nothing except hatred of Trump and of Bernie and any Democrat who even tried to reach out to Bernie supporters. Worse, he was a loose cannon, just as likely to spend his time waging war on Charles Schumer and Nancy Pelosi than opposing Trump.

He didn’t bother to file his paperwork on time to run in the primary, yet continued to act on FB as if he was still running. As the primary approached, I brought up the paperwork issue on FB. “Oh, I’m still running … but as an Independent, but I’m still the real Democrat in the race. I’m pulling a Bernie on Bernie. “

Unsurprisingly, Bernie won the primary, yet most of his primary opponents were still on the official ballot in November … as Independents, including my friend’s brother.

In the end, my friend’s brother received a smidgen less than 2000 votes in total. And watching the campaign, if I were a Vermonter, given the choice between Bernie and the rest of the candidates on the ballot for that seat, I would’ve voted for Bernie - and I hate Bernie with a purple passion.
